What does a Speech Pathologist help with?

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is a specialised service that supports children to develop their communication, speech, language, social communication, voice, fluency, feeding, and swallowing skills. A speech pathologist (also known as a speech therapist) assesses, identifies, and supports a range of communication and functional difficulties to help children communicate more effectively, participate in everyday activities, and build confidence.

At Home Psychology and Speech Therapy, our experienced speech pathologists provide personalised speech therapy for children, adolescents, adults, and families in Caringbah and surrounding areas.

Our approach is evidence-based, neuro-affirming, and tailored to each person’s strengths, needs, and goals.

We work with children from 2 years of age, offering tailored assessment and therapy for a range of needs including:

Speech clarity and articulation

Language delays and disorders

Social communication skills

Literacy support

Fluency (such as stuttering)

How We Can Support You

with Speech Therapy

Speech Sounds, Pronunciation & Language

Support with speech sound disorders, articulation difficulties, phonological delays, childhood apraxia of speech, and unclear speech. Therapy may also support vocabulary, sentence development, understanding instructions, and expressing thoughts, feelings, and needs.

Stuttering & Fluency

Support for children who experience stuttering, repetitions, blocks, or anxiety in speaking situations. Therapy is shaped around each child's goals, communication preferences, and confidence.

Social Communication

& AAC

Support with starting and maintaining conversations, turn-taking, expressing needs, interpreting non-verbal communication, and participating in interactions in ways that reflect each person’s goals. AAC may include communication devices, visual systems, picture supports, or other communication strategies.

Literacy, Learning & School Readiness

Support with phonological awareness, vocabulary, early literacy, reading comprehension, written language, classroom language, following instructions and routines, asking and answering questions, group participation, and communicating needs.

Feeding, Swallowing & Oral Motor Support

Assessment and support for selective eating, food textures, chewing, swallowing, oral-motor skills, and mealtime stress. Where appropriate, support may also include orofacial myofunctional concerns and oral habits such as thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use.

Speech Therapy Assessments

Understanding your child's communication needs is the first step towards helping them thrive. Our comprehensive speech pathology assessments identify strengths, challenges and the most appropriate next steps, giving families clear answers and personalised recommendations. Each assessment includes a detailed evaluation, a written report and practical guidance to support your child's development. If you're unsure which assessment is right, we'll help guide you.

Language Assessment (Expressive & Receptive)

Assesses how your child understands, processes and uses language, including vocabulary, comprehension and sentence structure.

Social Communication Assessment

Evaluates conversation skills, social interaction, turn-taking and understanding social cues.

Speech Assessment

Identifies speech sound difficulties, articulation issues and pronunciation challenges.

Literacy Assessment

Assesses the underlying skills needed for reading, spelling and literacy development.

Feeding Assessment

Evaluates oral motor skills, feeding behaviours and swallowing to identify any feeding concerns.

Comprehensive Assessment

A combined assessment for children experiencing challenges across more than one area of communication or development.

Signs Your Child

May Need Speech Therapy

For children, it’s not always easy to tell when speech and language development might need a little extra support. If you’ve noticed any of the following, we’re here to help guide you through what’s going on and the next best steps.

  • Your child isn’t talking as much as other children their age

  • Their speech is difficult for others to understand

  • They’re struggling with reading, spelling, or early literacy skills

  • They stutter or get “stuck” on words when speaking

  • Their voice sounds strained, unclear, or different to what you’d expect

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect at my child’s first speech therapy appointment?

We understand that attending your child’s first speech therapy appointment can feel a little daunting, so our goal is to make the experience relaxed, welcoming and supportive for both you and your child.

The first appointment is an assessment and information-gathering session, where you, your child and the speech pathologist will spend time getting to know each other. We’ll ask questions about your child’s development, communication skills, medical history and any concerns you may have. We’ll also observe and interact with your child to gain a better understanding of their strengths and areas where they may need support.

Together, we’ll discuss your goals for speech therapy and develop a plan tailored to your child’s individual needs. A parent or caregiver is required to attend the first appointment, as your insights play an important role in helping us provide the best possible support for your child.

Do you see individuals of all ages?

Yes we do - from children 2 years of age upwards, adolescents to adults.

How long do speech therapy sessions go for?

Our sessions are 50 minutes in length.

How many sessions will my child need?

The length of speech therapy is different for every child and depends on their individual needs and goals. It can vary based on the type of support required, how they respond to therapy, and how much practice is happening at home.

Some children may only need a short period of support to reach their goals, while others may benefit from ongoing therapy over a longer time. Your speech pathologist will regularly check your child’s progress and work with you to decide the best plan moving forward.

Do you offer home visits or online speech therapy for children?

Yes, in addition to our clinic, we also provide the convenience of both home visits, school observations, and online sessions via secure video conferencing. This allows you to choose the option that suits your preferences and comfort level.

Do you see NDIS clients?

Home Psychology and Speech Therapy provide services for those with self-managed and plan managed NDIS plans.

Do I need a referral to see a Speech Pathologist?

No. You don't need a referral to book an appointment with one of our speech pathologists. However, if you're accessing services through Medicare, the NDIS, or another funding pathway, a referral or supporting documentation may be required depending on your funding arrangements. If you're unsure how this works, please don't hesitate to call us on 0451 871 706 for more information.
